Weather you are building a new house or just thinking of renovating your backyard with a pool, there are several different types of pools that obviously requires different construction methods, varies in cost and require specific care in the future. I like to separate the pools in 3 main categories:
a) Concrete Pools - It is the most expensive option, takes the longest to build and can be fully customized to the size, shape and depth of your project. A concrete pool will most likely be finished with plaster and/or tiles. In the long run you will have to replaster your pool and also provide maintenance on the tiles which can be very expensive.

b) Vinyl Liner Pools - Its the least expensive option of pool that uses a stainless steel panel structure as the construction method. It also can be customized to whatever shape, size and depth. The vinyl liner can be chosen from a variety of patterns and is expected to last up to 15 years. Nowadays (like in the picture below) we use a technology called "vinyl over steel" that greatly enhances the final aesthetics'

c) Fiberglass pools - There are different manufacturers with different models and sizes, but a fiberglass pool can't be customized to a specific size and shape. Depending on the supplier and availability you will have to browse through an inventory of shells to pick the one that fits your project.
A fiberglass pool requires a crane to be installed after excavation, so a careful analysis of the access to the site is important. It can be the quickest type of pool to install from start to finish.
